Understanding Alopecia
Alopecia is a technical term for baldness. There are several different types of alopecia, the most common of which is alopecia areata. This is a condition where a person's hair will fall out due to an autoimmune disease. The cells of the body begin attacking hair follicles, causing hair loss. In some cases, there can be great hair losses while some people may only notice minimal hair losses. The main reason why treating this disease is difficult is because it is unpredictable. Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory medications which are used for autoimmune diseases. They can be given as injections or in an oral form. Sometimes for hair loss, they will also be applied directly on the scalp. The response to this medication can be gradual and take several weeks to notice positive results. Other medications which are often used are rogaine. This is a topical drug which is used for alopecia as well. This medication will typically take 12 weeks before hair begins to grow back. Results will vary depending on the person.
There are other medications which can be used and have varying degrees of effectiveness. These medications are the same as ones used to treat psoriasis and ones that are topical sensitizers. While these are usually used after other options have been tried, they can have some effectiveness in many people.
Although medications are sometimes used, there are other tips given to people with alopecia. In some cases, makeup can be used to hide or minimize hair loss. This is most beneficial in people who have light-colored hair which is easier to hide. When going out in extreme weather conditions like very windy weather, wearing hats and scarves can usually help to protect hair from further stress and damage. Since harsh weather can cause more hair to fall out or damage the hair, protecting the head while outside can be a beneficial measure.
One final tip is to reduce stress levels. Studies have shown that high-stress jobs and a high-stress lifestyle can worsen alopecia. Also, people who notice alopecia have recently had recent causes of stress in their life such as accidents, family deaths, an increase in stress at work, and other similar symptoms. While stress is probably not the main cause of alopecia, it can contribute to the worsening of the disease. Reducing stress can lessen the symptoms of alopecia and reduce the amount of hair loss.
While there are no serious medical problems associated with alopecia, it can have a difficult psychological effect, especially in women. For anyone who is having difficulty with alopecia, there are support groups and online forums to share ideas about treatment methods as well as provide support to each other.
